College Counseling FAQ — Ivy & Ember College & Career Austin TX

Question 1

What does a college counselor and independent educational consultant do?

Accepted Answer

A college counselor guides students and families through every step of the college admissions process — from building a balanced college list and crafting compelling essays to navigating financial aid, scholarships, and final decisions. Principal Paige also helps students explore career pathways so their college choice aligns with their long-term goals. Paige is an independent consultant, meaning she doesn't work for a prescribed school or curriculum. By maintaining her business's independence, the client's best interest isn't swayed by any other factors.

Question 2

What services does Ivy & Ember offer?

Accepted Answer

We offer comprehensive college and career counseling including college list building, application strategy, essay coaching, financial aid guidance, scholarship research, interview preparation, and career exploration. Whether you need full-service support from 9th grade through enrollment or targeted help with a specific step, we tailor our approach to your needs.

Question 3

Do you work with students at all grade levels?

Accepted Answer

Yes! While many families start working with us during junior or senior year, we strongly encourage beginning the process as early as 9th or 10th grade. Early planning allows students to build the right academic record, explore extracurriculars strategically, and approach senior year with confidence rather than stress. We consider our expertise to be in the 16–26 age range, but some students are ready earlier, and some benefit from career coaching into their late 20s and 30s.

Question 4

Do you also help with vocational and trade school options?

Accepted Answer

Absolutely. College is not the right path for every student, and that is perfectly okay. We help students explore vocational training programs, community colleges, apprenticeships, and other post-secondary options that align with their strengths and career interests.

Question 5

What if a student is interested in a gap year?

Accepted Answer

Gap years can be a wonderful option for students who need time to mature, explore their interests, or recover from burnout before diving into higher education. Principal Paige can help families evaluate whether a gap year makes sense, identify structured programs or meaningful experiences to fill that time, and ensure the student re-enters the college process with renewed clarity and purpose.

Question 6

What does a career coach do?

Accepted Answer

A career coach helps students and young adults clarify their strengths, interests, and values — then translates that self-knowledge into a clear direction for their future. Principal Paige works with clients to explore potential career paths, identify majors that align with their goals, and build the confidence and skills needed to pursue meaningful work. Whether your student is undecided, considering a career change, or simply wants to make sure their college choice sets them up for success, career coaching provides the roadmap to get there.

Question 7

What makes your services "boutique?"

Accepted Answer

Boutique concierge means we intentionally keep our caseload small so every student gets genuine, focused attention — not a cookie-cutter plan handed to hundreds of families. You work directly with Principal Paige from start to finish, never a junior associate or an automated platform. That means your student's goals, strengths, and story stay at the center of every decision we make together.

Question 8

How much does college counseling cost?

Accepted Answer

Pricing varies depending on the level of support you need — whether that is a single session for targeted guidance or a comprehensive package covering the full college planning journey. We believe every student deserves access to expert guidance, so we work to find an approach that fits your family's needs and budget. Reach out through our contact form or call us at (512) 689-0663 to learn more about current rates and packages.

Question 9

Who is Principal Paige?

Accepted Answer

Principal Paige is a retired secondary school principal and seasoned public educator with extensive experience as a coach, student advocate, and program manager. She brings a unique perspective to college counseling. Having worked inside schools for decades, and being a certified coach, she understands exactly what admissions officers and businesses look for and how to help young adults present their best selves.

Question 10

How do sessions work?

Accepted Answer

Sessions are personalized one-on-one meetings with your student (and parents when appropriate). We meet virtually or in person depending on your preference and location. Each session is focused on your student's specific needs, whether that is brainstorming essay topics, reviewing applications, or mapping out a college list.

Question 11

How do you help reduce stress for families?

Accepted Answer

The college process can create real tension between parents and students. Principal Paige acts as a calm, experienced third party who aligns everyone around a shared plan. By providing clear direction, organized timelines, and honest guidance, we take the guesswork out of the process so families can focus on what matters most.

Question 12

What areas do you serve?

Accepted Answer

We serve families throughout the greater Austin area including Manor, Austin, Leander, Cedar Park, Georgetown, Round Rock, Hutto, Pflugerville, Bastrop, Lockhart, Lake Travis, and Westlake. Virtual sessions are also available for families outside these areas.

Question 13

How do I get started?

Accepted Answer

The best first step is to reach out through our contact form or give us a call at (512) 689-0663. We will schedule a brief introductory conversation to learn about your student's goals and explain how we can help. There is no pressure — just an honest conversation about whether we are the right fit.

Question 14

When should we start working with a college counselor?

Accepted Answer

The earlier the better, but it is never too late. Ideally, students begin in 9th or 10th grade to build a strong foundation. Junior year is the most common starting point for full-service support. Even seniors who have not yet started their applications can benefit significantly from targeted guidance.
